Thrash metal guitar legend, and co-founder of Slayer, Kerry King came through Austin to play Emo’s in support of his debut solo album, From Hell I Rise (RPM), with Municipal Waste and Alien Weaponry opening. Kerry was joined on stage by his new band — drummer Paul Bostaph (Slayer), bassist Kyle Sanders (HELLYEAH), guitarist Phil Demmel (Machine Head), and vocalist Mark Osegueda (Death Angel). The band took to the stage with a seriousness, looking like they were ready to kick some asses. And they did kick ass. They ripped through the new album plus several Slayer songs, including fan favorite “Reign in Blood,” and performed a tribute to Clive Burr and the recently departed Paul Di’Anno of Iron Maiden.

In contrast, openers, Municipal Waste put on a less serious and more fun show. The only thing missing was a mosh pit. What’s a thrash show without a pit? Emo’s strict “no moshing” policy brought things down a bit, but even so, it was still a great show.
